Course Title: Bachelor of Science in Horticulture
The Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture is an advanced entry add-on NFQ Level 7 Horticulture programme which provides a part time progression route from NFQ Level 6 Horticulture graduates. It is a thoroughly modernised programme responding to new directions in the sector, focusing on sustainable environmental horticulture. The programme also provides a tertiary route for students who have completed a Level 6 in Horticulture at a College of Further Education and those who wish to continue their studies, providing them with a pathway into the degree level programme studies, widening degree participation and providing a solution to the skills shortage outlined in the Horticulture Education Review (2025).
This unique programme is designed to incorporate both the theoretical and practical aspects of horticulture, this programme includes modules on organic and sustainable food production, plant knowledge, landscape management and food production as well as ecosystems and environmental studies, business and personal development. The course provides hands-on opportunities to develop growing skills and engagement with the local community on real life practical projects.
IT Requirements: MEDIUM spec (minimum) (i.e. able to run Win 10, an AV solution and Office comfortably. Be able to use Wi-fi and camera to attend online classes). MS Windows 10 based laptops are recommended.
Higher Certificate in Science in Professional Horticulture Practice or Equivalent.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Horticulture programme will find opportunities across the horticulture sector in (but not limited to) the following areas: Craft gardener in parks and landscapes, Landscape construction and maintenance supervisors, Golf and Sports turf team lead, Horticultural technician, Organic and conventional food production, Team leaders in nursery production, Food farming and plant food product development, Establishing community gardening facilities and Entrepreneurial opportunities in Horticulture.

One half day per week on campus (Year 1 TBC, Year 2 TBC), 2-3 evening lectures (2 hrs.) 3-4 full day field trips per semester, scheduled Monday - Saturday.
