English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 6 in each component.

This course is designed for those who wish to make a career in management not only in the construction industry, but also in a wide range of growing areas such as in the sustainability, conservation and maintenance, retail and information technology management sectors.

The primary emphasis is on educating students to be managers in the construction sector and on developing strong competency in managing and planning the execution of projects in the most efficient, effective and safety-conscious manner.

The course also covers the technical aspects of construction work, including quantity surveying, land surveying, CAD and construction-related IT systems such as the emerging area of Building Information System. The different materials, technologies and systems used on construction sites in Ireland and abroad are reviewed, including in the growing sustainability, conservation and renovation areas.

The overall course provides a good balance between classes and practical work. A study field trip during Year 2 will introduce you to the principles of building conservation in other EU states, which will expand your employment potential and options.

Study Abroad Opportunities

In Year 3, Semester 1 (for 16 weeks), you have the opportunity to study in our partner university in USA, Purdue University, or as an exchange student for one semester.

Work Placement

In particular, the work experience module in Year 3 will allow you to experience at first hand the challenges and opportunities of working in the industry for a whole semester.

Professional Accreditation

This qualification has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland and, over the years, has become known and recognised internationally.

Graduates have found careers in large and small companies and across a range of occupations in both the public and private sectors, including working in sustainability, conservation, information technology, project management, and with building contractors or sub-contracting firms as Estimators, Quantity Surveyors, Programmers, Planners, Contract Managers and Site Managers. Many have attained high-level management positions in a wide range of areas and have gone on to become executive directors or managing directors."

To qualify for Advanced Entry applicants must be currently studying, completing, or have successfully completed, studies at Level 6, 7 or 8 in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) or an equivalent, in a related area. You must demonstrate by providing transcripts of results that you have achieved the learning outcomes for each stage you wish to advance past, for example:

• To enter Year 2 via Advanced Entry, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Year 1.
• For entry to Year 3, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1 and 2.
• For entry to Year 4, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1, 2, and 3.

Having worked in the construction industry beforehand and after consulting my peers, I chose this course last year because this course is a widely recognised qualification.

This course provides a strong emphasis on project and general management, with opportunities to be employed in diverse growing sectors of activities such as in the sustainability area.

With my construction degree from this course, I find myself capable of fulfilling roles at a young age that traditionally required experience practitioners.

On graduation, you may proceed to postgraduate studies leading to the award of MSc, MPhil or PhD at research institutes and universities worldwide.
