If you’re not sure which area of engineering to go for, this course is probably the right one for you. It’s designed to enable students to sample core engineering modules in first year and help them decide which area of engineering they most enjoy. They can then choose the area they want to pursue in subsequent years. In your first year, you’ll study subjects such as Algebra and Geometry, Digital Electronics, Engineering Science, Fundamentals of Calculus, Electrical Science, Introduction to Electronic Communications and Professional Development for Engineers, and gain experience in Workshop Practice. In the following three years, you can then specialise in the subjects that most interest you.

How it Works

You apply for TU804 Bachelor of Engineering (Common Entry) on your CAO application. In first year, you complete the core modules. You can then choose to enter into the second year of either TU807 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer Engineering, in Mobile Systems OR TU810 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronic Engineering.

Work Placement

Students will have the opportunity to gain work experience through an industry placement in Year 3.

IT Requirements

A HIGH spec computer is recommended (i.e. able to run Win 10, Linux virtual machines, VLSI design packages etc. comfortably, should be able to use Wi-fi and camera to attend online classes, needs high RAM, larger SSD,). MS Windows 10 based laptops are recommended.

English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6.0 overall (or equivalent).

Applications from international students are welcome for this programme. If you meet any of the following criteria, applications should be made directly to TU Dublin via the “Apply Now – Non-EU” link on each programme webpage.

• You hold Non-EU Nationality, and you live in a Non-EU country.
• You hold EU Nationality, but you have not lived in an EU country for 3 of the last 5 years AND you have not attended 5 years primary/secondary education in an EU country.
• You require a Student Visa to study in Ireland

Applications for undergraduate courses commencing September 2025 are now closed.

Applications for undergraduate courses commencing in September 2026 will open in November 2025. Applications will close in June 2026.

Please note, this course is not open for advanced entry applications.

Upon successful completion of Year 1, you can then choose to enter into the second year of either TU807 Computer Engineering in Mobile Systems OR TU810 Mechatronic Engineering.
