What to Report

There are three types of emails you may wish to report on.

  1. Phishing Emails
  2. Spam Emails
  3. Abusive Emails

Phishing Emails

Phishing is any email that is attempting to obtain your personal identity / online identity through fraudulent means, for example sending a link to a site that captures usernames or passwords which looks like a TU Dublin site

For Microsoft Outlook users, the simplest way to report Phishing is, with the message open, click the Report Message Button in the top right of the menu bar and select Phishing. This method moves the message to the Junk Folder and Reports the message to Microsoft. This is the preferred method.

Note: Message that are already in the Junk Mail folder do not need to be reported to IT Services or Microsoft and this button will be grayed out.

Reporting a Phishing message can also be easily done in outlook Online, with the message open select Junk and then Phishing:

If you cannot use either of these methods, IT services requests that you send a copy of the message to local helpdesk . This account is monitored. When a phishing message is reported, We will check the email system to determine if the message meets the criteria for removal and notification to the campus. We will also determine if any links in the message should be blocked.

Spam Emails

Spam emails are unwanted messages that are delivered to your inbox. They may not be malicious in nature but are unsolicited communications. To notify Microsoft of Spam, just like reporting Phishing, you can use the Report Message Button and select Junk instead of Phishing. This will help train Microsoft filters to send unwanted messages to your Junk Mail folder.

Abusive Emails

Online harassment, also known as cyberbullying, is a pattern of unwanted behaviour involving electronic technology that is known, or ought reasonably to be known, to be unwelcome.  Online harassment typically results in the creation of an intimidating, demeaning and/or hostile working, living or learning environment.
