BYOID (Bring Your Own Identity)

What is BYOID?

Bring Your Own Identity (BYOID) allows external users, such as External Examiners and External Lecturers, to use credentials from their home institution or personal Microsoft account instead of being issued a separate TU Dublin account to access Brightspace.
BYOID has replaced sponsored/affiliate accounts for external users who require access to Brightspace and other TU Dublin services.

How Does It Work?

The concept is simple: TU Dublin trusts your home institution (or Microsoft account provider) to authenticate you, while TU Dublin authorises your access to Brightspace.
TU Dublin redirects the login request to your home institution or account provider.
The provider verifies your identity and responds to TU Dublin.
You gain access, sometimes requiring a one-time Allow/Accept confirmation.

How Is It Set Up?

External users (non-TU Dublin managed accounts) can be added in two ways:
1. Direct Addition to the TU Dublin Microsoft Tenant
For some applications, including Brightspace, a TU Dublin sponsor requests that the external account be added directly to the TU Dublin Microsoft tenant and assigned any required permissions or groups.
2. Invitation by Email
For Microsoft collaboration tools such as Teams and OneDrive, external users typically receive an email invitation.

Best practice when opening invitation links is:
Copy and paste the invitation link into an InPrivate window in Microsoft Edge or an Incognito window in Google Chrome.
Institutional accounts on managed institutional devices will often work in a standard browser session.
For personal Microsoft accounts, we recommend creating a dedicated browser profile for that account.
The invitation directs you to a Microsoft sign-in page. Sign in using the same email address that was added as an external user in TU Dublin. Once the invitation is accepted, you can access the resources that have been shared with you.

Troubleshooting Common BYOID Issues

Quick Check: Verify Your BYOID Credentials
Before troubleshooting individual issues, verify that your external identity can authenticate successfully with TU Dublin.

Step 1: Open:
https://myapps.microsoft.com/tudublin.ie
A successful sign-in should redirect you without displaying an error message.
If issues occur:
Open the link in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
Ensure that no other Microsoft accounts are currently signed in.
If problems continue, review the troubleshooting guidance below.

Access Denied After Accepting the Invitation
Cause: Required permissions have not been granted, or the account was not configured correctly.
