Professor Clíona Doris lectures in harp performance, performance studies and artistic research at TU Dublin Conservatoire. She lead the development of the Doctor of Music in Performance research programme, and supervises several DMus and PhD research projects. She previously held the positions of Head of Orchestral Studies and Head of Conservatoire.
Following harp studies with Denise Kelly at Belfast School of Music and throughout her undergraduate music studies at Queen’s University Belfast, she pursued postgraduate studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, graduating with the Doctor of Music Degree in Harp Performance and Music Literature, under the direction of the acclaimed harpist, Susann McDonald.
Her research interests are in creative and artistic practice, and in research and dissemination of historical and contemporary repertoire. As a concert harpist, Clíona has extensive experience as a soloist and chamber musician, with recordings for Riverun Records, RTÉ lyric fm, Louth Contemporary Music Society, NMC and Diatribe. Her most recent recordings include two digital releases: Brian Boydell Mosaics and Sketches: Chamber Music for Harp with TU Dublin Conservatoire colleagues, and Cantares de la Frontera for Louth Contemporary Music Society featuring solo harp works by Peter Garland and Deirdre McKay. Her broadcasts include performances on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Ulster, RTÉ lyric fm, National Public Radio USA, Classic FM TV, UTV, RTÉ Television and BBC Television.
An active exponent of contemporary music, Clíona has premiered works by Elaine Agnew, Enda Bates, Linda Buckley, Donnacha Dennehy, Dave Flynn, Jason E. Geistweidt, Deirdre Gribbin, Philip Hammond, Brian Irvine, Deirdre McKay, Neil Martin, Betty Olivero, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Ian Wilson, Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky and John Zorn.
Clíona is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Concert Hall, and a member of the Corporation and Board of Directors of the World Harp Congress. She is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Contemporary Music Centre of Ireland, Chair of the Ninth World Harp Congress Dublin 2005, and served as a board member of Music Generation and Music Network.
