Revealing Grangegorman family day - Alien Mystery

Published: 8 Jun, 2023
A number of colleagues from the school participated in the much-anticipated Revealing Grangegorman family day event on Saturday 3rd of June. The STEM Ensemble group that has many members from the school and included many school colleagues, was centrally involved in two events on the day.
Quad Quest, which was envisioned and coordinated by school colleague Frank Duignan, was an opportunity for families to engage in practical STEM based challenges that reflect some of the academic disciplines that are based in the Central Quad.
A number of colleagues from the school were involved as creators and exhibitors in this activity, including Ted Burke, Kevin Chubb, Padraic McEvoy, Mayank Parmar, David Powell and Damon Berry as well as colleagues from a number of other schools based in the central quad. The school's activities for the day focused on pathfinding robots and on understanding binary in order to open a padlock.

Grangegorman Alien Mystery,  a scavenger hunt for young families  around the Grangegorman campus using mobile devices, is based on the premise that aliens have invaded the campus. Participating family team members have to solve the mystery and save the campus. This activity was developed by a talented and enthusiastic team of 3rd year engineering intern students from TU821 the Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The students were Muhammad Zain, Michael Ward, Sean O'Byrne, Abud Beshir and Brandon Amariei. The students were mentored by STEM Ensemble members Fatima Badmos, Mayank Parmar, Michael Core and Damon Berry, with enthusiastic support from the school admin team and from technical officers Andrew Dillon and Finbarr O'Meara.
Both events were highly successful with very positive comments from happy participants.
