Students and staff from TU Dublin's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering recently visited Mercury Engineering's impressive new headquarters in Dublin, gaining valuable insight into the technologies, processes and innovation driving one of Ireland's leading engineering and construction companies.

The visit, which took place on 2 November, was organised by Michael McDonald, Lecturer in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The group was welcomed to Mercury's state-of-the-art headquarters, a purpose-built facility designed to support collaboration, innovation and sustainable working practices.

Students heard from industry experts including Ciaran McCreary, Director of Engineering Support, Offsite Manufacturing and Digital Transformation, and Ciaran McManus, Surveying Manager, Advanced Technologies. Together with colleagues from across the organisation, they provided a comprehensive overview of Mercury's operations and the company's leadership in digital transformation within the construction sector.

The presentations explored a range of topics shaping the future of engineering and construction, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), industry certification and standards, BIM maturity levels, digital deliverables, offsite manufacturing, and the application of virtual and augmented reality technologies. Students also gained an understanding of Mercury's extensive project portfolio and international presence.

The visit highlighted the growing importance of digital technologies in the built environment and provided students with valuable industry perspectives that complement their academic studies. Opportunities to engage directly with engineering professionals allowed attendees to learn about career pathways, emerging technologies and the skills required to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry.

Speaking after the event, organisers noted the value of strengthening links between higher education and industry partners, helping students to connect classroom learning with real-world engineering practice.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering extends its thanks to the Mercury team for hosting the visit and sharing their expertise with TU Dublin students and staff. The experience provided an excellent opportunity to see first-hand how innovation, digital transformation and collaboration are shaping the future of engineering and construction.
