Dr Afrasinei is a Geographer with 10+ years’ expertise in interdisciplinary research on remote sensing and GIS applied to environmental sciences, with a PhD in Environmental and Land Engineering Sciences from University of Cagliari UNICA, Italy.
Academic background and research expertise accrued in Ireland, Italy, Tunisia, Australia and Romania. Particular research focus on GIS and Earth observation applications for sustainable agriculture, remote and proximal sensing, land cover/use ground truthing and mapping, land degradation and desertification analysis, change detection, environmental risks monitoring, mineralogical spectral analysis, decision tree classifiers, Eurostat LUCAS, Soil Information System Ireland.
She worked and collaborated in EU (www.wadismar.eu/) and H2020 projects (www.floweredproject.org/). Having a research network in 10 countries, she authored and co-authored 10 scientific peer-reviewed articles (SCOPUS h-index 6) and several other publications as short papers or proceedings, participated in 20 international conferences and member or organising committees for several conferences. SPIE, IRLOGI and EGU member. Member of 1st place-winning team of “Farming by Satellite Prize” (GSA, EEA, Copernicus) 2018. Served as a reviewer for Remote Sensing MDPI, ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information, Journal of Applied Remote Sensing SPIE, Land Degradation & Development Wiley, International Journal of Digital Earth Taylor & Francis Group, Applied Geography Elsevier, Journal of Environmental Management Elsevier, Aeolian Research Elsevier.
Before joining TU Dublin, she held a permanent position with Ordnance Survey Ireland as GIS Specialist in the Landcover Team of the Surveying, Remote Sensing and Geodesy Department, working on the Irish National Land Cover Map 2018 Project.
Before this, she was a post-doctoral fellow in the Spatial Analysis Unit, Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre, developing an integrated soil and land-use geospatial dataset, and delivering the National 2 km grid-point Land Use and Soil Inventory of Ireland - LUSII (SOLUM Project, epasolumproject.wixsite.com/solum).
