Dr John D Mulcahy is an independent gastronomy tourism researcher, activist, advisor, academic and consumer who advocates for a wider understanding of the role of food ‘in’ tourism, drawing on a diverse skillset from his experience in industry, public service, and academia. Originally a Dublin Institute of Technology hotel management graduate, his international career encompasses fine dining, hotel schools, UN & offshore catering, gastropubs and wine education, culminating in responsibility for food tourism development in Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority of Ireland. He is a graduate of Oxford Brookes (MSc, Hospitality Management), Adelaide (MA, Gastronomy), WSET (Wine Diploma) and TU Dublin (PhD, Food Tourism Development in Ireland). Honoured by the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Food Travel Association, he is currently compiling a compendium focusing on the food and beverages of the island of Ireland, for publication in 2027.
