Patrick O'Donoghue is a mechanical and manufacturing engineer with expertise in advanced surface engineering, coatings technologies, and materials characterisation. He graduated from Dublin City University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, before completing a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in 2021. His master's research, titled "Graphite Coating of Peripheral Stents Deposited Using the CoBlast Technique", focused on the development of surface-modification approaches for biomedical applications, with particular emphasis on improving the performance of implantable medical devices.

Following his postgraduate studies, Patrick worked across the aerospace, biomedical, and advanced manufacturing sectors, where he developed, applied, and characterised high-performance coating systems. His industrial experience includes contributions to thermo-optical coatings for spacecraft, large-scale coating processes for biomedical implants, and the development of specialised industrial solutions such as mould-release coatings and functional thin-film technologies.

In 2025, Patrick joined CREST as a Research Engineer on a VISTA-funded project, where he is involved in advancing a novel dry chemical surface-modification technology. His current research focuses on enhancing corrosion protection, durability, and functional performance across a wide range of industrial materials, bridging fundamental materials science with practical industrial applications.
