Excellence in Research Supervision

Description 

The Excellence in Research Supervision Award recognises TU Dublin staff who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and skill in mentoring and guiding research degree students. Nominees for this Award should have demonstrated effective support in guiding students toward the timely completion of their research, provided mentorship that aids in career development, encouraged continued professional growth through training and opportunities, and fostered the integration of students into the broader research community.

Eligibility  

The award is open to staff at TU Dublin who have experience of supervising postgraduate research degree students to completion.

Nomination & Application Process 

Nominations should come from two TU Dublin research degree students/ graduate(s), on a single form.

Evaluation Criteria 

Nominees will have sustained experience of research student supervision to graduation, and have demonstrated excellence in supervision practice, project guidance and supporting their students to develop their skills through training and providing advice on career development. A nominee might for example have achievements with respect to:

  • Supervision Practice - created a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel valued, motivated, and equipped to navigate the research journey; instilled high standards of research ethics, integrity, and professionalism in their students; helped integrate their students into the research community;
  • Project Guidance - encouraged critical thinking, independence, and creativity, allowing students to develop their own research ideas and contribute to their field; provided clear, constructive, and timely feedback to help students progress in their research; provides advice and support towards the timely completion of the research thesis
  • Training & Career Development – encouraged and supported skills -training, conference presentations etc.; assisted students with career planning, including opportunities for networking, publishing, attending conferences, and gaining teaching, practice or leadership experience; provided effective mentorship to students including advising them on their career goals.

Evaluation Process 

The applications will be evaluated by an external panel who will submit their recommendations for the top 5 scoring applications to the Awards Decision Board, which will be chaired by the Vice President for Research & Innovation.
