2019 CAO Points - 312
Spatial Planning is all about shaping the future of our towns, cities and regions. Environmental management is about ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations. This programme will prepare and equip you with the skills to be a decision-maker and leader in planning our urban and rural environments, and in developing environmental management solutions to problems such as climate change and biodiversity loss.
The programme is highly practical and applied. Projects and fieldwork, under the supervision of practising professionals, are an integral part of the programme. Third year includes a field trip to another EU country.
Students take all subjects in Year 1 and there are common modules throughout the programme. In Year 2, you opt to stream into either spatial planning or environmental management. Year 4 includes a final thesis and major project.
Planning graduates will be able to prepare complex development plans, carry out sensitive environmental assessments and work with communities and developers to resolve difficult planning issues.
Environmental management graduates will be equipped to carry out environmental audits, prepare and implement plans for waste and resources management, and prepare and evaluate environmental impact and risk assessment.
The programme is industry-focussed and includes a Work Placement component during third and fourth year, with many graduates going on to find employment with their WP partner. Through professional accreditation, graduates are career-ready for work in Ireland or abroad.
Study Abroad Opportunities
Through the Erasmus programme, you can spend one or two semesters abroad in either the second or third year of the programme. Recently, students have gone to Hamburg and Dortmund (Germany), Lyon (France), Melbourne (Australia) and Tampere (Finland). We also have a partnership with the University of Beijing, China, where some of our students have studied.
Students undertake a Work Placement module during third and fourth years. This includes training in Professional Practice and also involves SafePass training.
The programme is professionally accredited by the Irish Planning Institute and the Royal Town Planning Institute, the main employer groups. This is the only accredited undergraduate planning and environmental management programme on the island of Ireland.

This field of study is one of the most interesting, educational and relevant to today’s world. I have learned an incredible amount in my four years about our country and the rest of the world. I have loved every moment in college and will leave with some great memories and some equally good friends. I highly recommend spatial planning and the college to anybody.
The best thing about doing this course is that you are taught by professionals with vast experience in the sector, who work in it, and so you are being kept up to date with what is relevant.
The numerous field visits give you a first-hand understanding of how things work and some of the interesting places which you will visit include large factories, waste sites, professional offices and nature parks.
