Biodiversity Week 2026 at TU Dublin: Advancing collaboration and awareness

Published: Wednesday 20 May 2026 - 10:10

In 2026, Biodiversity Week at TU Dublin marked progress in fostering collaboration across key stakeholders, including industry, civil society, and academia, to promote biodiversity awareness and protection.

A key highlight was the collaboration between TU Dublin Sustainability and Sodexo, the university’s facilities management service provider. This partnership extended to SAP Landscapes, the landscaping contractor at the Grangegorman campus, which hosted a stand in the East Quad building on the Grangegorman campus on 18 May to mark the beggining of Biodiversity Week. The stand raised awareness of the importance of biodiversity and showcased sustainable landscaping practices that support ecosystem protection.

The Bioblitz project, funded under the Green Campus Open Call 2025–2026 and led by Gerard Ryder and Niamh Plunkett from the School of Mechanical Engineering, was successfully piloted during Biodiversity Week on 18 May at the TU Dublin Tallaght campus. The initiative engaged sixth-year students from St Mary's National School through gamified, clue-based activities designed to enhance their understanding of biodiversity. Students actively contributed to the National Biodiversity Data Centre by observing and cataloguing species found on campus. The strong engagement and positive outcomes of the pilot have demonstrated the project’s potential, with plans already in place to expand it to other schools and potentially scale it across additional TU Dublin campuses.

As part of the same Bioblitz initiative, an exhibition is being held in the TU Dublin Tallaght Library during Biodiversity Week. The exhibition showcases the winning entries from the Nature Connections Photo Competition, which invited students and staff to explore TU Dublin campuses and capture images of native biodiversity, including plants, animals, invertebrates, birds, and aquatic life. Participants accompanied their photographs with written reflections, adding a personal dimension by linking their images to meaningful memories and experiences.

And this is not all! You are welcome to attend the upcoming event to be hosted by the Global Action Plan at GLAS Community Garden in TU Dublin Blanchardstown on Friday, 22 May. At the event, you will learn how community gardens and outdoor spaces can support nature and people to flourish. GLAS at TU Dublin Community Garden is a collaborative garden project between Technological University Dublin, Global Action Plan and Fingal County Council.
