Enhancing Building Efficiency at TU Dublin - Consultation Session for Greenway Hub Users

TU Dublin’s Sustainability Intelligence Team is inviting all residents and users of the Greenway Hub to a consultation session about the upcoming installation of People-Counting Sensors (PCS) in common areas. These sensors will be installed as part of a the Towards a Sustainable University Campus (TSUC) initiative aimed at improving how the building is used, maintained, and made more energy efficient all while staying fully GDPR compliant. The sensors will not track individuals, record imagery of people or count people in private rooms or offices. The sensors will detect human movement only in shared, common spaces and create a heatmap of that movement.
When: 18 June, 2025 1:45-3pm
In person: GW-402, Greenway Hub Building, Grangegorman Campus
Hybrid event: Join online
RSVP: Complete this form, questions on the project can be raised via the same form
Consultation Session
During the Consultation Session, the Sustainability Intelligence project team (Dr Philippe Lemarchand, Dr Ahmed Hassan, Kumar Raushan, and Dr Tarun Kuma) will give an overview of the project. Building users and attendees will learn:
- An overview and timeline for the project.
- How the smart sensors operate.
- How people-counting data will be gathered, processed and stored.
- Discuss data privacy and GDPR compliance, and invite building user questions and feedback.
The team will also describe the potential outcomes which can emerge from the initiative, which may be of benefit to building users and researchers. Results from the project aim to:
- Share insights into how spaces are utilised.
- Allow TU Dublin to allocate space resources more efficiently, potentially reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
- Help align energy usage with actual demand, minimising unnecessary heating and lighting consumption in underused areas.
- Help maintain comfortable indoor conditions, directly benefiting occupant wellbeing and productivity.
- Support sustainability and reporting requirements under the Climate Action Plan
Who should attend?
- All Greenway Hub residents and staff, students, and researchers who use the Greenway Hub, and anyone interested in sustainability and smart buildings.
- Colleagues from Campus & Estates, Campus Planning, the Sustainability Office, the Dublin Energy Lab (DEL), and the Built Environment Research and Innovation Centre (BERIC).
Why is this consultation important?
- Transparency: Learn what data is being collected and how it's used
- Open discussion: Share your thoughts and concerns, or through a feedback form available before and after the session
- Better spaces: Your feedback help TU Dublin make smarter, more sustainable decisions that benefit all building users.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to create a Digital Living Lab at TU Dublin, where your engagement and co-creation with campus users helps shape the future of TU Dublin’s buildings and campus-wide sustainability.
