Light Up Your Bike This Winter 2026
As the clocks go back on Sunday, 25 October, darker mornings and evenings are on the way. If you're cycling to campus, being seen is just as important as seeing. Front and rear bike lights can make a significant difference to your safety and visibility on the road.
To help keep our campus community safe this winter, the TFI Smarter Travel Programme is offering free bike lights to all TU Dublin students and staff who cycle to campus as part of the Light Up Your Bike campaign.
These lights are designed to be used as a back-up light and should not replace your primary bike lighting system. They are also available to pedestrians and mobility aid users who would like to attach them to a backpack, jacket or mobility aid to increase their visibility when travelling after dark.
Pick Up Your Free Lights at:
- Student's Union Offices, Aungier Street, Blanchardstown, Bolton Street, Grangegorman, and Tallaght,
- Office TMB003, Tallaght,
- Porter desks (Rathdown House and East Quad, Grangegorman, Connect Building, Blanchardstown),
- Indoor bike shed in East Quad, Grangegorman.
Winter Cycling Tips
- Use front and rear lights for every bike journey, even during daylight hours when visibility is poor.
- Consider reflective clothing or accessories to improve visiblity.
- Give your bike a quick winter check. Ensure your brakes, tyres and lights are working properly before setting off.
- Leave five minutes earlier. Winter conditions can mean slower journeys, and a less rushed commute is often a safer one.
- Be prepared for changing weather. Waterproof layers and gloves can make a huge difference to comfort on colder days.
Smarter Travel for Campus programme campaigns, like Light up your Bike, supports safer active travel journeys to, from and between our campuses; providing free active and sustainable travel resources to students, staff and campus users supports many of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
