Discover Doughnut Economics workshops at TU Dublin

What does a thriving future look like? Find out by literally stepping into the Doughnut (Raworth, 2017) - a workshop where participants come together and are introduced Doughnut Economics in an experiential and accessible way.
In this one-hour, interactive workshop, groups of 15 to 70 participants gather in a large indoor or outdoor space to explore the Doughnut Economics framework using two large ropes to create powerful visual boundaries: the ecological ceiling and the social foundation. The workshop is designed to be an immersive and reflective experience that brings big ideas down to earth. Facilitated by Sustainability Education Leads, participants walk, reflect, and converse within these boundaries, embodying the tension between planetary limits and human needs.
Through paired prompts and group discussion, participants connect emotionally and intellectually with the pressing challenges of the 21st century—leaving with a stronger sense of purpose and practical ways to think differently about sustainability, justice, and economics.
This workshop draws on resources from the Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) and can stand alone or be expanded with follow-up activities—such as exploring the Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist or applying the Four Lenses of the Doughnut model. Whether you're introducing the UN SDGs or sparking systemic thinking, Step into the Doughnut is an partical starting point.
The workshop takes about one hour and consists of:
- an opening introduction,
- using the large rope to create the outer boundary,
- using the smaller rope to create the inner boundary,
- stepping into the doughnut which involves walking freely around the ropes,
- paired reflections,
- group reflection
- and, wrapping up debrief.
