Reconnect the Disconnected: Wildflower Planting and Growing What Comes Next

Published: Mon 2 Nov 2026 - 15:15

Join a team of volunteers in TU Dublin's Aungier Street Courtyard for a morning of planting, conversation and collective action.

Reconnect the Disconnected is a collaborative project transforming the courtyard into a biodiverse shared space where people can reconnect with nature, place and one another through learning and action. Together, participants will prepare the ground beneath the courtyard trees and plant native wildflowers to support biodiversity, creating additional habitat and food sources for pollinators and other wildlife.

As we work, we will also begin a conversation about what might come next for Reconnect the Disconnected during the academic year. The micro-garden has already become a place for biodiversity, outdoor learning, gathering and connection, but it continues to evolve. The Reconnect the Disconnected team would love to hear participants' ideas and explore opportunities for students, staff and partners to become involved in its next phase.

We are also keen to hear from colleagues across different disciplines who may be interested in connecting student learning or projects with the garden. Last year, Dr Sarah Rawe's first-year Chemistry students created a medicinal herb garden, while Dr Tara Rooney's MSc Digital Marketing students developed content highlighting the garden's biodiversity and impact. Both groups made meaningful contributions, applied their learning in a real-world setting and had fun along the way. No gardening experience is required. Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear that you do not mind getting muddy. Tools, materials and guidance will be provided.

Come for the planting, the conversation, or both. Help us create space for native wildflowers while planting ideas for what comes next.

Can’t make it on the day? If you have an idea or simply want to explore what might grow next, please contact Dr Lucia Walsh (lucia.walsh@tudublin.ie)
