TU Dublin Launches New Sustainable Events Procedure
TU Dublin has launched a new Sustainable Events Procedure, providing a practical framework to help staff, students, contractors and event organisers deliver more environmentally responsible, inclusive and socially impactful events across the University. The procedure applies to all TU Dublin-organised, funded or sponsored events, from conferences and seminars to student activities, workshops and large-scale cultural events.
The new procedure is a significant step in supporting the University's Climate Action Roadmap and commitment to embedding wider sustainable practices into day-to-day operations. By integrating sustainability into event planning, TU Dublin aims to reduce waste, encourage low-carbon travel, support responsible procurement and create welcoming, accessible experiences for all participants.
A Practical Guide for Sustainable Event Planning
The procedure provides organisers with a clear roadmap for incorporating sustainability considerations at every stage of an event. It encourages proactive planning around areas such as:
- Sustainable travel and transport options for attendees
- Waste prevention and recycling
- Responsible sourcing and procurement
- Energy and resource efficiency
- Accessibility and inclusion
- Sustainable catering and food choices
- Measuring and improving event performance
Through the adoption of these practices, TU Dublin is helping ensure events contribute positively to environmental, social and economic sustainability objectives while supporting the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Supporting a Culture of Sustainability
Events play an important role in university life, bringing together students, staff, researchers, industry and community partners, and local communities. The new Sustainable Events Procedure recognises that these gatherings also present valuable opportunities to demonstrate sustainability leadership in practice.
If you are organising a student society event, an international conference or a staff workshop, event organisers are encouraged to consider the wider impacts of their decisions and identify practical ways to reduce environmental footprints while maximising positive social outcomes.
The procedure forms part of TU Dublin's ongoing work to create a more sustainable campus and empower the University community to take meaningful climate and sustainability action.
