SABE Celebrates TU Dublin Green Week 2023

TU Dublin Green Week

TU Dublin Green Week takes place from 6th March to 10th March 2023.  Visit www.tudublin.ie/explore/news/green-week-2023  to find out about the wide range of events, activities and opportunities across the University and to participate in creating a sustainable future for all.

Students and staff from the School of Architecture, Building and Environment have put together an extensive programme of activities taking place on the Bolton Street, East Quad and Linenhall campus locations.  Activities include: -

Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring -  An Environmental Book Reading Club  

Dr Ken Boyle, School of Architecture, Building and Environment, will host a discussion on Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. To participate you can read the whole book or just one or two chapters. We will discuss the book, its historical context, impact and relevance to today.  Silent Spring alerted readers to the damage widespread and unregulated use of insecticides and herbicides was doing to humans, habitats and bird and fish populations. Through Silent Spring and her earlier publications Rachel Carson succeeded in creating a new public awareness of the environment.  Copies of the book are in the Bolton Street library.

VOICE Recycling Workshop

It's easy to recycle when you know how.  If you are confused about what should go into your recycling bin, then this is the event for you.  VOICE is an environmental non-profit campaigning to stop resource waste and pollution.

Climate Activism Learning Event

Be informed and take action.  Together we can make a movement that harnesses the passion and courage of volunteers around Ireland to get involved and make a difference.  With: Extinction Rebellion; Sea Shepherd Ireland; Forest Friends; One Future; Not Here Not Anywhere.  Organised by TU Dublin MSc Sustainable Development Students

Community Support for Active Travel Solutions

An online guest lecture as part of the MSc in Sustainable Mobility, by Robert Burns, Director of Housing with Fingal County Council and former Director of Infrastructure and Climate Adaptation with DLRCoCo on “Engaging the community and finding support for implementing active travel solutions (Behavioural Change and Active Travel)”

Swap – Mend – Upcycle, with Change Clothes Crumlin

A clothes swap and upcycling event will take place on Thurs March 9th with Change Clothes Crumlin.  This will take place on the ground floor of East Quad, in the open space beside EQ - 002.   The clothes swap will be from 12pm to 3pm and the upcycling workshop will be from 2pm to 4pm.

Shaping Ireland’s Electricity Future

Find out more about how EirGrid, Ireland’s Transmission System Operator, are planning the electricity grid, now and into the future. Topics covered will include plans on how the electricity grid is being prepared to facilitate the Government’s Climate Action target of 80% renewable energy by 2030, and an overview of major electricity infrastructure projects that are actively progressing across the country.  Speakers: Jamie Moore, Senior Lead Engagement Specialist with EirGrid and Tomás Bradley, Senior Lead Planner with EirGrid

Architecture and Environment Book Swap Club

The Architecture Students Association, together with the EPS Society, will host a book swap for books on architecture, climate change and the environment in the Linenhall Building Lobby on Friday from 12 – 1PM.

Keynote Address: 'This is not a climate emergency, it's an everything emergency', by John Gibbons, Climate Journalist

From the MSc in Sustainable Development students: “To round off a fantastic week of Climate Action and Sustainability Events taking place for TUDublin Green Week, we are very excited to bring you John Gibbons as our Key Note Speaker. John is a phenomenal communicator who pulls no punches when it comes to all things climate change so come along and be inspired by his message: 'This is not a climate emergency, it's an everything emergency'. You won't want to miss this!”

About the Key Note Speaker: Based in Dublin, John Gibbons has been writing and campaigning on environmental and climate issues for the last decade and a half. This included a three year stint as weekly environmental columnist with the Irish Times.  He is founder of the website Climatechange.ie and he also maintains a long-running environmental blog at ThinkOrSwim.ie. He has appeared on national broadcast media outlets, including RTE (TV and radio), Virgin TV, BBC TV and CBC (Canada), TodayFM and NewsTalk. He has been a weekly environmental columnist with The Last Word on TodayFM for the last two years. He is a regular contributor to a range of print and online media outlets, including, the Business Post, Irish Times, Guardian (UK), Irish Examiner, TheJournal.ie, and DeSmog UK, among others.  He is also an experienced public speaker on environment and climate issues, giving regular talks in schools and universities, as well as participating as a guest speaker in a wide range of public events. He is also co-author of the Routledge Handbook of Environmental Journalism (2020).  He maintains an online environmental presence via Twitter, with nearly 35,000 followers. He is also a member of the National Union of Journalists, the international Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) and the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).A father of two, he is also co-founder of a medical and healthcare publishing and creative organisation.
