The bioeconomy seeks to use renewable biological resources such as animals, plants, and organic wastes and side-streams to produce food, feed, bio-based products, services and bio-energy. It does this, while also reducing waste.
Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2025 takes place from Monday 13 October to Sunday 19 October 2025. During the week, an all-island community of businesses, research centres, business clusters, communities, farmers, and government bodies gather to showcase and celebrate the bioeconomy in Ireland.
Researchers from the School of Food Science and Environmental Health at TU Dublin welcomed transition year students from Deansrath CC, CBS Westland Row and Stanhope St secondary schools on Friday 17th Oct 2025. The visiting students engaged with a range of demonstrations and hands-on activities showcasing various agri-food related applications of bioeconomy including demonstrations and hand on activities.
Activities included:
- Displays showing the effects of processing and fermentation on the properties of fava bean proteins, from raw fava beans to flour, protein isolates, and fermented ingredients. This is aimed to give students a visual understanding of how processing and fermentation can transform plant protein properties and contribute to the development of more sustainable food products, while also emphasising the role of research and innovation in advancing sustainable food systems within the bioeconomy.
- A demonstration on how solid-state fermentation and insects can be used to valorise food industry by-products to develop novel protein ingredients that are safe, healthy and sustainable.
