Dublin Science Festival

The School of Food Science and Environmental Health hosted the SFI Dublin Science Festival event in TU Dublins' Grangegorman campus on Thursday evening 16th of November 2023 as part of Science week with over 114 attendees. We had a full programme of events from research talks by Richie Hackett and Lisa Ryan, Teagasc Oakpark National Centre for Brewing and Distilling, Dr Sinead Morris of SETU and Prof Kieran Kilcawley, Teagasc Moorepark on research they are currently carrying out with colleagues in TU Dublin. This was followed by a Quiz hosted by Dr Diako Khodaei with generous prizes sponsored by Stuart McNamara of Portmagee Distillery. All participants then went to our exhibitors in our lab facilities with Chioke Okolo speaking on instrumentation used for the analysis of distilled spirits, Will Keating discussing brewing and distilling and showcasing the Still and brewing facilities in the school. Dr Catherine Barry-Ryan and Dr Azza Silotry Naik showcased with undergraduate and postgraduate student's current new product development and waste valorisation projects in the school in our Food Processing Hall. Dr Lubna Ahmed presented the Sensory suite facilities. Judith Boyle, School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology delivered a sensory experience in the Guinness Education Bar and Diageo had also provided some state of the art new dispensing technology to showcase. The lobby was packed full of posters on research by Staff and Students on all aspects of brewing and distilling from analysis, new product development, Regulation and Geographical indicators and waste valorisation of the industry along with a Teeling Whiskey Company showcase. Thanks to Philip Smyth and team of the SFI Dublin Science Festival, John O'Donoghue of the Royal Society of Chemistry for their hands on support on planning and running the event and for the sponsorship.
