The Collaborative Intelligence for Safety Critical Systems (CISC) project, coordinated by TU Dublin, has been officially recognised as a European Union Success Story by the European Commission and expert evaluators.

The recognition highlights the project’s exceptional achievements under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) framework, showcasing CISC’s contribution to advancing research, innovation, and industry collaboration in the field of safety critical systems.

Over its lifetime, the CISC consortium; comprising 17 academic and industry partners, has made significant strides in developing human-centred approaches to intelligent and autonomous systems. The project supported 14 doctoral researchers across Europe, 10 of whom have successfully defended their theses, with the remainder on track for completion.

Among CISC’s key outcomes are:

The project also delivered open-source datasets and tools designed to enhance research and development in automation, decision making, and system design for safety-critical applications, ranging from healthcare and aviation to manufacturing and transport.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr Maria Chiara Leva, Project Coordinator and Associate Professor at TU Dublin, said:

This achievement is a testament to the creativity, dedication, and interdisciplinary spirit of our team. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of collaborative intelligence and laid the foundation for safer, smarter systems.

Dr Leva added that the project’s success reflects the strength of TU Dublin’s research community and its European partnerships:

We are deeply grateful to the ADAPT Centre  and its director Prof John Kelleher, who was also the co-initiator of the  project Idea, for their invaluable support throughout the project and also beyond in continuing some of the research strands, and to the research office team at TU Dublin and all our CISC partners for their commitment and collaboration. Thanks to this backing we have built lasting partnerships that will continue to shape the future of human factors and intelligent systems in safety-critical domains.

The European Commission’s ‘Success Story’ designation is awarded to projects that demonstrate exceptional scientific, societal, and economic impact, setting benchmarks for excellence across Europe.

A book is also being drafted in collaboration with CRC press in Taylor and Francis group titled 'An Introduction to Collaborative Intelligence in Safety Critical Systems: Theory and Applications'. Learn more about CISC’s results and resources: CISC Project Key Results
