School Research Day 2025
The School of Physics, Clinical and Optometric Science hosted its annual School Research Day on Wednesday, 7th May 2025. The event brought together academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students and researchers from RESC-Centre for Radiation and Environmental Science, CERI-Centre for Eye Research Ireland, IEO-Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics, Nanolab Research Centre and GAP-Group of Applied Physics. The event included Annual Post Grad Evaluation Presentations, Poster Session and the presentations of two invited speakers, Prof. Steve Meaney and Prof. Christine O’Connor. It highlighted the School's commitment to highly interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, showcasing the collaborative efforts that drive innovation across various fields. Congratulations to all postgraduate students who took part—your research demonstrated exceptional quality and dedication!
"Dr. Shane Murphy Postgraduate Research Award” was established to honour the memory of our esteemed colleague and friend, Dr. Shane Murphy, a Lecturer in Physics at the Tallaght campus. Shane was a pioneer in developing scanning tunnelling microscopy techniques, a passionate researcher within GAP, a great mentor to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. His influence and enthusiasm illuminated the School and the TU Dublin research community.
This year, the award for the best postgraduate poster was proudly presented to Matthew Hellis from IEO. His poster "Holographic Diffusers Effect on Visual Acuity, Stereoacuity, and Parental Attitudes Regarding Cosmesis" is part of a PhD project co-supervised by Dr Kevin Murphy, Dr Matthew Sheehan and Dr Suzanne Martin. Well done Matt!
Matt Hellis, a PhD student at the IEO centre is presented with the Dr. Shane Murphy Postgraduate Research Award by Prof. Pat Goodman, Chair of the School Research Committee and Kevin Nolan and Eugene Hickey, physics lecturers at the TU Dublin's Tallaght Campus
