I am skilled researcher in structural and materials engineering, specialising in the mechanics, design, and chemical synthesis of composite materials with a focus on their sustainable applications in existing structures. My academic journey began with a BSc degree in Structural Engineering from Tishreen University in Syria, where I studied the structural design of reinforced concrete tall buildings, steel and composite structures. Pursuing my passion for this field, I completed a MSc degree in the prestigious programme of Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions at the University of Minho, Portugal and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelona Tech, Spain. My MSc dissertation focused on the experimental characterisation of steel and basalt fibre reinforcements for masonry walls, which laid the groundwork for my ongoing research interest in innovative retrofitting techniques. In my PhD studies, I researched bio-based retrofitting systems for existing structures and developed advanced skills in the chemical synthesis and mechanics of lignocellulosic building materials. As a culmination, I developed an innovative seismic retrofitting technique for existing structures, resorting to vegetal fibres with an environmentally friendly surface modification system. The system was patented by the Portuguese Institute for Industrial Properties. Before joining TU Dublin, I worked as a postdoctoral associate on an industrialproject that was funded by KERAKOLL SPA for building materials and chemical manufacturing. In addition to my research experience, I have a solid background in teaching and MSc& PhD theses supervision and have received various prestigious awards (AGA KHAN International Scholarship and the doctoral scholarship of the Portuguese foundation of science and
technology). I also possess extensive experience in collaborating with international industry partners.
