Top 2% of the most cited young scientists globally
Dr Bilal Javed is an Assistant Lecturer in Biochemistry (Industrial Biotechnology) at the School of Food Science and Environmental Health. As an Early Career Researcher his work has been focussed on the development on novel sensing platforms for food borne pathogens and has been a leading example, as supervisor, for postgraduates and undergraduates. Additionally, he has been recognized among the Top 2% of the Most Cited Young Scientists globally by Stanford University and Elsevier, underscoring the impact of his research on the scientific community. His research work resulted in new knowledge generation for solving major national and global problems and challenges, such as food security and world hunger, drug discovery, and drug development along with the mobilization and training of several researchers.
Dr. Bilal Javed was recognised as “Positive Male Role Models” in International Men’s Day (IMD) by our colleagues in the TU Dublin research and innovation community.
Just at the start of his lecturing position, he secured funding to supervise three PhD students. He has advertised ARISE PhD positions on various platforms, attracting more than 100 applications globally for three PhD positions under his supervision. This ensures building a research team and leading highly skilled individuals for quality research outcomes.
Dr Bilal’s collaborations span Ireland, the EU, the USA, and beyond, involving industrial and academic collaborations. His few industrial collaborations include partnerships with Pfizer, Screenlink Ireland, and Trinity Biotech, which are his collaborators on ARISE-funded grants. Bilal is an active working member of the CA22103 (Net4Brain), CA21145 (EURESTOP), CA21147 (ENOTTA), and CA20114 (PlasTHER) COST Actions to enhance his research impact and foster international partnerships. Bilal recently worked on a proposal to secure a grant of €198,950 from the Croatian Science Foundation, Research Projects (IP-2024-05) entitled “The next generation of marine bioinspired drug carriers for cells” with Senior Scientist Dr Nadica Ivosevic DeNardis at Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatia and other collaborators in Poland, Turkey and Ireland.
Dr Javed has formed a skilled research team, providing continuous training through regular group meetings and guest lectures. His commitment to using advanced tools and technologies, alongside a supportive work environment, has led to publications in high-impact open-access journals, significantly contributing to the body of knowledge in his field.
Dr Javed optimizes the value of his research by addressing relevant problems aligned with Ireland’s Priority Research Areas and TU Dublin Strategic Intent 2030. His interdisciplinary research in the domain of industrial biotechnology, food security, and biosensing device development ensures wide applications and translational research from the lab to the market, focusing on commercialization and UN SDG such as Goal 3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 14, 17. He recently secured Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (SATLE) funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Ireland for projects, that evaluate AI-based digital platforms for sustainable biomanufacturing and their life cycle assessment that will help him to implement at least one change to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biotechnology program. These efforts highlight his interest and research-based approach to designing and innovating the curriculum for the model education settings according to the TU Dublin University Education Model that focuses greatly on improving the learners’ experience.
