ERASMUS and summer interns presentations

Five Presenters on 30 July 2026

  • Two incoming French ERASMUS students: Marlene Jade and Cassandre Lambert-Bouthier
  • Two summer interns funded by ARISE and the Faculty: Allex Elliott and Lone Elin Haas
  • Nisha Johns, a PhD student supervised by Dr Azza Silotry Naik and Prof Hugh J. Byrne

The presenters have been working together over the summer with Dr Elena Alexa at the Centre for AMR and One Health Research (CAMROH), Catherine Morelli, Emmanuel Duah Osei, Ranahansi Bandara, and Dr Azza Silotry Naik at the Nanolab Research Centre, Centre for Sustainable Packaging and Bioproducts, and Food Innovation & Health Research Centre during the summer in the School of Food Science and Environmental Health.

Presentations

Marlene Jade presented “Development of a High-Protein Edible Straw.”

The project was led by Dr Azza Silotry Naik in collaboration with Dr Elena Alexa at the Centre for AMR and One Health Research (CAMROH) and Dr Tara Heffernan at the MICRA Technology Gateway.

ERASMUS student Cassandre Lambert-Bouthier (Institut Agro Montpellier) presented “Interaction Between Microalgae Rhodomonas lens and Bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum.”

Cassandre was supervised by Dr Elena Alexa and Dr Azza Silotry Naik. She is working with PhD student Nisha Johns, who is supervised by Dr Azza Silotry Naik and Prof Hugh J. Byrne.

Allex Elliott presented “The Extraction and Quantification of Mycosporine-like Amino Acids (MAAs) from Irish Seaweed for Skincare Applications.”

Allex was awarded an ARISE Summer Internship, led by Dr Azza Silotry Naik.

Lone Elin Haas presented “Anti-inflammatory and Neuroprotective Potential of Protein Hydrolysates from Marine and Brewery Sources.”

Lone was awarded a Faculty Summer Internship, led by Dr Azza Silotry Naik.

PhD student Nisha Johns presented “Enumeration and Morphological Characterisation of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Rhodomonas lens Towards a Future Probiotic Delivery System.”
