About

The Thermo-Fluids and Energy Systems (TFES) Research Group, led by Dr Sajad Alimohammadi, is based in the School of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dublin, Bolton Street. It brings together three postdoctoral researchers and six PhD researchers, with four PhD and two postdoctoral completions to date.

Our focus
About half of our research addresses data centre energy efficiency, at device, server and whole-facility scale. The rest covers electronics and EV battery cooling, synthetic jets and microfluidic devices, droplet evaporation and phase change, flow-driven energy harvesting, smart manufacturing and digital twins, and aeroacoustics.

Our approach
Every project pairs high-fidelity simulation with physical measurement, so models are validated against our own experiments and experiments target what models cannot yet predict. Most projects start with a problem brought to us by an operator or manufacturer and end with a result they can act on.

Support
Over EUR 1.5 million in competitive funding from Enterprise Ireland, Research Ireland, SEAI, Eurostars, the European Regional Development Fund through ARISE, and Purdue University's Cooling Technologies Research Center, with doctoral and postdoctoral support through MaREI and the ERBE Centre for Doctoral Training.
