Impact

Why it matters
TFES research targets measurable energy savings in data centres and thermal systems, developed with the operators and manufacturers who will use them, and trains engineers for Ireland's digital and energy sectors.

Results
A linear air amplifier offering a more reliable alternative to rotary fans in server racks. Fan power reductions of 20 to 30% demonstrated on our benchmarking platform. A data centre cooling model accurate to within 2% of annual measured cooling energy, able to flag metering faults. An invited review that has become a reference point for micromixing strategies.

2026
Dr Alimohammadi elected to Young Academy Ireland at the Royal Irish Academy and appointed Guest Editor of a special issue of Energy on the energy and environmental impacts of cloud computing and data centres. iTWIN-TIS awarded, currently TU Dublin's only Eurostars project. Calibrated model of an Irish data centre's cooling system published in Applied Thermal Engineering. TU Dublin hosted the 29th Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium, co-organised by Dr Alimohammadi, where David Salter took 3rd place in the poster competition.

2025
Purdue CTRC funding awarded for joint TU Dublin and Trinity College Dublin work on quiet, efficient air cooling for compact electronics. David Salter nominated for an ITherm Best Paper Award. Micro synthetic jet heat sink and dual jet heat transfer results published at ITherm, THERMINIC and in the International Journal of Thermal Sciences.

2024
Invited review on micromixing strategies published in the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering. Delara Soltani placed 3rd in the Best Paper Presentation competition at the 27th Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium.

2023
TU Dublin's inaugural Early Career Researcher Award. Fulbright-Enterprise Ireland Scholarship for Eoin Oude Essink at Purdue University.

2022
Eoin and Tadhg-Lorcan Oude Essink won the nTopology/EOS Responsible Part Challenge with a heat sink design, and Eoin placed 3rd at the 25th Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium.

2020
Harvey Rosten Award for Excellence in the Physical Design of Electronics, with Prof. Tim Persoons, for a linear air amplifier to replace rotary fans in server cooling.
