Time Management for Researchers
Time & Venue:
Who should attend
Researchers at all stages of their professional development, including academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and final year PhD students.
Course Description
As professionals, we are constantly juggling our efforts to meet the demands of our research and our supervision / impact / teaching responsibilities and everything else that goes alongside being a good academic citizen in a changing environment.
This balance is, of course, tricky: invest your time in one, and you take away from the others; free some time for yourself to get some priority work done and lose the time you need to properly deal with the junior colleague who knocks on your door seeking advice.
Alongside this is the need to spend time focusing on career development i.e. all the things that are pivotal but get squeezed out because they are important but not urgent. (This “important-but-not-urgent” factor also comes into play when it comes to having the ‘career development’ conversation with managers and PIs.)
In this focused and interactive session, we’ll help you to:
- Reflect on your priorities – long, medium and short term and analyse how your time is spent in relation to these
- Consider an action plan to help you focus on what you need to do to build your career
- Understand some simple time management and prioritization techniques so as to help you make the most of the time that you do have
