English Language Requirements

Undergraduate applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency. The table below includes the English language proficiency tests and results which are acceptable for most programmes at undergraduate level.

Undergraduate applicants who can verify that they have studied their school-leaving exams through English (e.g. A-Levels, SATs) but have not taken English as an examined language may also meet English language proficiency requirements. Note: where an undergraduate programme has a specific English entry requirement (e.g. TU985 Journalism), applicants must meet this requirement or equivalent.

Postgraduate applicants: Other evidence may be taken into account at the discretion of the University. For example, a degree taken through English or in an English-speaking country may be accepted as proof of English language proficiency.

In all cases, the certificate of your English language standard/test must have been issued within 2 years of the expected start of your course.

TU Dublin accepts the following tests:

Note: Test results must be from a single sitting; applicants cannot combine the results of multiple tests.

IELTS Academic Test: The minimum score is 6.0 with no less than 6 in each component, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score. Details can be found on individual programme pages for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

TOEFL iBT Test: The minimum score is 80, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score.

Duolingo English Test: The minimum score is 120 and a score of at least 110 in each subscore, unless otherwise stated. Please be aware that some programmes require a higher score.

LanguageCert ESOL Test: The minimum score is B2 Communicator High Pass with no less than 33 in each skill taken with no more than 3 months between components, unless stated otherwise. Please be aware that some programmes may require a higher score.

In addition, applicants must meet the other TU Dublin specific requirements for the particular programme(s) applied for, (Maths, Science etc.). See individual programmes of study for detailed entry requirements.

International Foundation Programmes require students to meet a threshold of IELTS 5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5 in each component.
