The BSc in Pharmacy Technician Studies (Add-On) is a professionally focused Level 7 degree designed to support the career progression and advanced training of qualified pharmacy technicians. Building on existing pharmacy technician qualifications and workplace experience, the programme prepares graduates for enhanced responsibilities within modern community, hospital, and wider healthcare settings.

The programme focuses on advanced pharmacy practice, patient safety, professional development, and employability. Students develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in areas such as clinical pharmacy services, accuracy checking, medication reconciliation, chronic disease management, clinical aseptic techniques, infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacy operations, procurement and supply chain management.

A strong emphasis is placed on real-world pharmacy practice, workplace-based learning, communication, teamwork, and patient-centred care, helping students strengthen the competencies required for evolving pharmacy services and future professional practice.

The programme has been developed through close engagement with community and hospital pharmacy stakeholders and is delivered by an experienced academic team with recognised expertise in pharmacy technician education and work-based learning. The programme team are also founding members of the European Association of Pharmacy Technicians – European Academic Network, supporting collaboration and advancement in pharmacy technician education across Europe.

The programme team’s commitment to excellence in teaching and employability-focused education has been recognised through several national awards, including the National Forum DELTA Awards (2018–2021; 2021–2024; 2025–2028), the AHECS Employability Award for Research-Informed Practice (2023), and the TU Dublin Le Chéile Award (2021).

Applicants must hold a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science in Pharmacy Technician Studies, awarded by TU Dublin or another recognised Irish Higher Education Institution.

Pharmacy technicians are essential to the effective, efficient and safe running of hospital pharmacy services. They work with pharmacists to manage the purchasing, storage, supply and distribution of medicines to all the wards and departments in the hospital, thereby ensuring patients receive the medicines they need during their hospital stay. They also work in the hospital’s aseptic compounding unit, preparing doses of medicines for patients. As hospital pharmacy services become more complex, the opportunities for pharmacy technicians are changing and expanding. Graduates from TU Dublin are consistently well prepared to work as pharmacy technicians and to contribute to the ongoing development of hospital pharmacy services.
