“I felt the BBS programme offered a lot of choice and variety, allowing students to focus on areas of interest and to take modules focused on a desired career path. I liked the fact there was an emphasis on group work, which I found in my job hunting to be extremely important to employers. There is also a good balance between time dedicated to lectures and time to work on projects, with all lecturers being very approachable when advice was needed. Since graduating I have secured a job in banking with the option of taking professional exams to further progress my career”.

Ian Gorman
Bank Official, AIB (Class of 2012)

“I would highly recommend the BBS course to anyone thinking of a career in Business. It exposes you to many important aspects of a business and does this in a very practical way. In DIT, there is a strong focus on teamwork, which is excellent in preparing you for business situations when you start your career. The support you get throughout the course is fantastic and there is always someone to answer your questions and give you advice on career options.

Upon graduating from the BBS I applied for IBEC’s Export Orientation Programme (EOP) (graduate programme) and I am now a brand ambassador for Jim Beam’s Irish portfolio in Boston. I am gaining valuable international experience, launching new products in the marketplace, whilst also completing a Postgraduate Diploma in International Business Development through DIT. I know that without the foundations from the BBS course I would not have been offered this placement. I have been able to bring what I have learned in DIT and couple it with my experience. It has opened a lot of doors for me and really has given me the best start to my career”.

Mairead Heavey
International Employee Development Specialist, (Class of 2012)

“I chose to complete the BBS due to its diverse nature. There are clear streams in which you can specialize but you also gain a broad knowledge of accountancy, e-business, international culture and consumer behavior. I now work for Jameson on their international brand ambassador program. One module which links clearly to my current job is International Business Management. The real life scenarios introduced on this module really bring the theory to life and help you come to terms with the complexities of working with a multinational company. I would highly recommend the BBS program in DIT to anybody who wants to develop a broad well rounded base from which to begin their career”.

Denis English
Jameson Brand Ambassador, Pernod Ricard Thailand (Class of 2014)

“I started the BBS programme in 2010, having completed a Higher Certificate also offered by DIT. I firmly believe that a variety of aspects from this diverse course have helped shaped my career to date. Firstly the main aim of carrying out this three year course was to help me get on track to pursue a career in finance, a passion of mine from a young age. The broad range of modules offered, particularly the finance and accounting modules ensured a basic knowledge was drilled into me from year one thus allowing me to develop a greater understanding of the financial world.

Secondly continuous assessment was a focus of the BBS programme, and we were encouraged to take on essays and presentations which were of direct interest to us. As well as keeping me engaged throughout the course, this form of assessment has definitely helped me to adapt to life outside of college. For example, in interviews I found that companies want more than just a degree, they want a personality, they know your exam results, and they want something else.  The BBS programme allowed me to develop strong presentation skills, which in turn has definitely enabled my confidence to shine through during interviews.

Thirdly in 2011 I took a semester to study abroad in Montpellier. The Study Abroad module is a fantastic part of the course and one which I would recommend to all students. Aside from developing my French (which I hadn’t studied since 2008), I got an opportunity to experience a new culture and to meet new people. It was interesting to see how the French education system worked and the experience definitely allowed me to broaden my horizons. The freedom and independence obtained from these few months abroad also helped me to really focus on pursuing a successful career”.
