Faculty Fundamental workshops have been designed to support the realisation of the TU Dublin strategic Intent through the UEM, by providing staff teams with structured guidance as they plan, review or reflect upon their programme provision. These sessions complement Central LTA Workshops and programmes. Writing Learning Outcomes: Why is it so important?

Aims: To develop knowledge and skills to correctly define, write, and revise Programme and Module’s Learning Outcomes.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: By the end of this webinar, you will reflect on and practice the learning outcomes' main characteristics, structure, fundamentals, and relevance. A practical guide of Do’s and Don’ts will be delivered, and other online resources to guide your practice.

Selecting/Designing effective Learning and Teaching Methods

Aims: By the end of this workshop/webinar, participants will be able to consider a range of potential learning types in their teaching, select effective learning and teaching methods associated with different learning types and design/adapt existing methods to work effectively with their groups.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: Research has demonstrated that students learn most effectively from a blend of different learning and teaching strategies. In this workshop/webinar, we will explore the Six Learning Types discussed by Laurillard, a range of effective learning and teaching methods associated with each type, and a toolkit of methods to choose from depending on the teaching context and groups of learners.

Designing Fit for Purpose Assessment and Feedback strategies

Aims: Participants will to be able to select and design a constructively aligned module assessment method and to review their assessment and feedback practices across a Module or Programme

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: The workshop will cover the basics of designing assessment methods to evidence and support students’ achievement of Module learning outcomes and to create a balance of assessments for/of/as learning across a programme

Supporting Collaborative and small group learning

Aims: To discuss the benefits and challenges of student collaborative activities and to consider what is involved in integrating small group learning into a module.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: During this webinar, we will present practical strategies to support the integration of student collaborative activities into your module. An opportunity will be provided to think about the benefits and challenges associated with small group learning, both from a learner and teacher perspective.

Building Authenticity into your Assessment Approaches

Aims: This workshop will provide:

  • guidance on the incremental development of authentic approaches to assessment
  • opportunities for participants to discuss what authentic assessment means to them, in the context of their discipline and graduates’ future careers
  • practical tips on identifying authentic assessment methods that are aligned with their module and programme outcomes

Duration: Normally One hour

Description:

Assessing learners ‘authentically’ involves presenting them with tasks and problems that resemble or simulate those encountered by professionals in the ‘real-world’. In addition to the real-life context which serves as the basis for its design, an authentic assessment will also call on learners to demonstrate the same kinds of ‘competencies, or combinations of knowledge, skills and attitudes, that are applied in situations in professional life’ (Gulikers et al, 2004) such as open-ended inquiry, complex problem solving, collaboration, and performance or artefact creation.  This workshop will provide a short overview of the literature on authentic assessment, engage participants in discussion of how ‘authenticity’ can be interpreted within the context of their discipline or field, and offer actionable guidance on how individual lecturers and teams might identify opportunities for authentic assessment while undertaking curriculum review.

Communicating Effectively with Students

Aims: By the end of the session, participants will be able to consider and utilise different approaches and methods to enhance communication with their students in both online and f2f contexts.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: Communicating effectively is key to successful teaching. This session will explore ways to create a positive learning environment through effective communication. We will also reflect upon our own classroom management approaches and discuss appropriate ways on how to navigate through difficult situations that may arise with students.

Active Learning strategies to engage your students in the online or face-to-face classroom

Aims: At the end of this workshop you will be able to describe at least three active learning strategies, identify a module or lecture where you can implement an active learning strategy, and articulate the steps needed for successful implementation.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: Active learning is all about increasing student engagement to foster better learning. This workshop is specifically about helping students and staff to get more from the lecture experience.

During this webinar, we will have a short discussion about student engagement and what it means in the classroom, both online and face-to-face. We will then explore a number of active learning strategies and consider the factors that may make them appropriate for you to start using in your lectures now.

ADigital by Design: the hows, whys, and wherefores

Aims: By the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to explain the importance of integrating learning technologies into academic practice in this digital age; know how to take a 'digital by design' approach to their practice; adopt a digital by design approach when designing planned digital learning activities.

Duration: Normally One hour

Description: TU Dublin seeks to provide a digitally enabled student learning experience that will develop the most sought-after digitally capable graduates, therefore, all modules offered at our university will need to be technology-enabled or ‘digital by design’ to support this. Taking a ‘digital by design’ approach means that learning technologies are intentionally and thoughtfully integrated into practice on a planned, ongoing and consistent basis over the duration of a module and combined with pedagogical principles and practices to enhance and transform the teaching, learning and assessment experience of students. During this workshop we will provide you with practical strategies and templates that will guide you as you design such learning activities with your module's mode of delivery in mind.
