Audacity in Action: TU Dublin Partners with BIS Network for Historic Black Women’s Conference

Last month, TU Dublin, in proud partnership with the Black Irish Sisters (BIS) Network, hosted Ireland’s first-ever Black Women’s Conference—a milestone moment in our journey toward true equity and inclusion.
Held in the Concert Hall on Grangegorman Campus, the event gathered Black women, men, and allies from across Ireland and the U.S. in a vibrant, intergenerational celebration of identity, empowerment, and connection. The atmosphere was nothing short of electric.
Representing TU Dublin, Dr. Orla McDonagh, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, welcomed guests and underscored the university’s deep commitment to inclusive partnership. She highlighted the collaboration with BIS Network as a living model of allyship, grounded in shared vision and sustained action.
Guests included Senator Linda Nelson Murray, who delivered a powerful speech on belonging and leadership, and MEP Nina Carberry, who stood in solidarity with the Black community. Warm messages were shared from Minister for Education Helen McEntee and Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain, affirming the national importance of the event.
We were also honoured by the presence of Professor Yvonne Galligan, TU Dublin’s former Director of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion. Though now retired, Yvonne’s attendance spoke volumes about her enduring commitment to allyship and to championing the voices of Black women in Irish society. Her presence was a meaningful reminder that allyship doesn’t end with a role—it’s a lifelong ethos.
Keynote addresses from Sandra Babu Boateng and Lola Molola moved many to tears and reflection, reminding us of the transformative power of visibility, voice, and sisterhood.
The feedback was clear and heartfelt—this space was “needed, long overdue, and unforgettable.” Many young women and men shared that they had never experienced anything quite like it.
Audacity is not a one-time event. Plans are already in motion for next year’s conference, with the vision to continue making space for healing, joy, and bold leadership.
This is how we do EDI—with courage, collaboration, and community.
