Celebrating UN World Sustainable Transport Day: Have you seen our Car Pool spaces?
To mark UN World Sustainable Transport Day on 26 November we are spotlighting our new Car Pool spaces.
TU Dublin is mandated under the National Climate Action Plan 2025 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51% in 2030. The second highest emitter of greenhouse gases in Ireland comes from transport. The findings from the TFI National Transport Authority TU Dublin Smarter Travel Survey 2024 report demonstrate a commitment by staff and students to sustainable and active travel modes to campus. While 76% of respondents reported using a sustainable or active mode as their primary form of commuting, many still expressed a desire to increase their use of these modes - with 52% wanting to walk more often, 44% wishing to cycle more frequently, 41% hoping to use public transport more often, and 28% expressing interest in carpooling.
TU Dublin encourages the most sustainable travel option possible for students and staff and has introduced car pool spaces on each of our campuses. These brightly coloured orange spaces near campus entrances promote carpooling, helping multiple people arrive in one car. This reduces the number of cars on the road and lowers emissions.
They operate on an honesty system and you still need to have a parking permit to park in the spaces. They are located alongside Age-friendly spaces, intended for users over 55.
