Eleven Green-Campus Open Call projects announced for 2024

As part of the Green-Campus Open Call 2024, eleven projects were awarded micro grant funding to progress environmental and sustainability activities under the themes of:

Of these projects, five were supported through Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) and six were supported with funding from TU Dublin's Green-Campus programme

The Green-Campus Open Call 2024 programme was designed to help bring ideas to life by making micro-grants available to selected projects. The programme encouraged a partnership approach to environmental education, management and participants were encouraged to develop projects that can be implemented using the living lab approach.

Introducing the projects:

  1. 'The Refridge Project - Tackling food waste and food insecurity through a shared community fridge system': School of Computer Science student, Bohdan Yeriemienko, together with support from TU Dublin's Student Volunteering Coordinator Claire Flannery, secured funding to tackle food waste on the Grangegorman campus and food insecurity through a shared community fridge system.
  2. 'Green Week Litter-Picking'. As part of a multi-campus action to improve air quality and tackle litter on campus, Healthy Campus Project Manager Teresa Hurley will coordinate litter picking activities as part of Green Week 2024.
  3. 'Little Free Library': Encouraging Circular Behaviour on Campus'. Coordinated by School of Marketing & Entrepreneurship lecture, Hilda Burton, together with business Marketing and Advertising and Marketing Communications students, the little library will work towards: 1. Research - Students will evaluate through primary and secondary research the mindsets. 2. Behaviour and challenges associated with circular behaviour on the TU Dublin Tallaght campus. 3. Change Initiative Ideation: students will ideate around possible ways to enact change to circular behaviour on campus which are in keeping with the TU Dublin climate action road map.
  4. 'Re-Turn Project': TU Dublin's Student Volunteering students Aleksander Biegalski, Alex Siedlok, Cosmin Clopotaru, teamed up with School of Mechanical and Design Engineering lecture Dr Colm O'Kane and Chaplaincy colleague Service Paul Mallon. The goal of the initiative is to reduce plastic waste across Bolton Street and Linenhall by setting up a return scheme for plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Strategically placed return bins, combined with clear, informative signage, will encourage students and staff to recycle. Funds generated from the scheme will go to a local charity or projects that engage the TU Dublin community in sustainable and socially responsible practices. 
  5. 'EcoHPC: Sustainable and Energy-Aware Computing on High-Performance Systems' - Coordinated by School of Informatics & Cybersecurity Lecturer, Tania Malik, the projects aims to address energy efficiency in High-performance computing (HPC) systems and make significant contributions towards the Green-Campus and TU Dublin Climate Action Roadmap themes by advancing energy-efficient practices within the HPC Nexus Lab infrastructure at the Blanchardstown campus.
  6. 'Forest Bathing Garden': Coordinated by School of Mechanical and Design Engineering  lecturer Gerard Ryder, together with Campus & Estates Senior Staff Officer John Heaney, the project will refresh a central space at the Tallaght campus to provide an essential relaxing area that can be enjoyed by campus users. New developments to the area will include an accessible path, benches, raised beds and planting, and nesting boxes and feeders for avifauna - each designed to make impact for Health and Wellbeing, Education, Life on land, Life under water and Partnerships for the Sustainable Development Goals.
  7. 'The Material Intelligence Lab': Coordinated by School of Mechanical and Design Engineering  Lecturer, Ceri Almrott, the project aims to enhance the material intelligence of design students, by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to create alternative materials from waste streams. By repurposing waste materials like plastics and cellulose, the project will align with the Green-Campus themes of Litter & Waste and Energy, while contributing to University decarbonisation efforts in the design process.
  8. 'Soil Sensing': Exploring the effect of composting and soil fermentation techniques on soil biodiversity'. Coordinated School of Mechanical and Design Engineering lecturer Gerard Ryder, the project will study the effect of a number of composting and soil fermentation techniques on soil biodiversity and will develop a number of sensors that could be used to visualise soil biodiversity. The project will focus on using food waste and paper waste generated from the canteen at the Tallaght campus for the experiment.
  9. 'TU Dublin Green Campus Challenge 2025': the initiative is a collaborative project between School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology lecture Rachel Freeman and Global Action Plan Ireland (GAP). The project seeks to engage TU Dublin’s students and staff in a climate action challenge using an interactive digital platform, which will allows participants to log micro climate actions and see each action’s impact on greenhouse gas reductions in real-time. 
  10. 'Reducing Food Waste and Packaging Waste in SCAFT - Reusable Bread Bags towards Greener Bakery (Culinary) practices​': ​Led by School of Culinary Arts & Food Technology (SCAFT) lecturer Sheona Foley the project builds on a previous project to build capacity within the school by introducing food waste initiatives. Students and staff will develop reusable bread bags for bakery students to take away unsold bakery goods.
  11. 'A Smart Energy Monitoring System - University Labs Using Raspberry Pi and Arduino', School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SEEE) lecturer Damien Doheny will lead this project which focuses on monitoring the electrical consumption of a laboratory at the Tallaght campus with data broken down by service. The project will collaborate with key stakeholders including the SEEE, the Centre for Sustainable Digital Technologies, the Sustainability Office, Campus & Estates and Campus Planning.
