Speaker: Conor Sweeney (University College Dublin)
Title: Weather and Climate Modelling for Ireland’s Renewable Energy
Date: 1pm, Monday 9 January 2023
Location: TU Dublin, Grangegorman, Central Quad, room tbc
(Tea and coffee will be provided following the seminar)
Abstract: This talk will describe how computer models of the atmosphere can be used to find new and improved methods of forecasting for renewable energy, and to investigate how climate change may impact renewable energy in Ireland in the coming decades. Important considerations when forecasting for wind turbines will be explained, and then for photovoltaic (PV) panels, which are used to generate electricity from sunlight. Accurate forecasts of wind and PV generation allow the electricity to be used efficiently. The talk will discuss issues with forecasting on ranges from hours to weeks ahead. Wind and PV make up the majority of the planned increase in renewable energy as Ireland aims to decarbonise its electricity system by 2050. Some of the challenges in increasing our reliance on wind and PV will also be discussed.
