Gabrielle, TU874, receives Hamilton Prize
Fourth-year student, Gabrielle Pichot, was acknowledged for her talent in mathematics and outstanding academic performance by receiving the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics on Thursday.
The Hamilton Prize is awarded annually by the RIA to the outstanding undergraduates in each of the Universities in Ireland based upon their academic performance in the penultimate year of their studies. Gabrielle Pichot is now entering the final year of her degree BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences and was the deserving recipient from TU Dublin.
The prizegiving ceremony took place in the Royal Irish Academy on 16 October (commemorating the date in 1843 on which renowned Irish scientist and mathematician William Rowan Hamilton made his discovery of quaternion algebra) and was enjoyed by all the prizewinners and their family. The ceremony was addressed by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science of Ireland, James Lawless. Minister Lawless himself is a mathematics graduate and remarked:
As a maths graduate, I know how far maths can take you. It opens doors to research, finance, teaching, economics, and politics. It is a strong foundation for any path, and I am proud to be part of this celebration of excellence in undergraduate mathematics.
Mathematics is central to Ireland's success. Our fastest-growing industries, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, medtech, financial services, and data analytics, all depend on strong maths skills.
The prizes were awarded by Dr Danny McCoy, the CEO of Ibec, and by Nobel Laureate in Physics, Professor Kip Thorne. The prizewinners were also rewarded with a fascinating and insightful masterclass with Prof Thorne.
We are very proud of the achievements of Gabrielle and wish her all the best in the final year of her degree and in the bright future ahead of her.
