Head of Mathematics Learning & Support appointed
We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr John Butler as the new Head of Mathematics Learning and Support at TU Dublin.
This role, based in the School of Mathematics & Statistics, is designed to support students throughout TU Dublin, to encourage participation in mathematics and statistics, to break down barriers and false perceptions about these subjects, and to champion all things mathematical!
In particular, John will be overseeing the operation of the Mathematics Learning Centre, a free, non-judgemental service available to all students of TU Dublin, no matter what their programme of study, that aims to help students with their mathematical and statistical understanding and empower them to develop their confidence and ability in these subjects. The service is offered on all our campuses and online and provides a safe and supportive environment in which to learn and to work with tutors so that each student becomes more independent, self-confident, and can achieve their true mathematical potential, so that they fully succeed in their college programmes.
In addition, John will be working with colleagues in recruitment, outreach, and access to encourage school leavers not to see mathematics as a barrier to their ambitions, but to appreciate the supports that exist in TU Dublin. He will also be working to assist current students of all needs, abilities, and backgrounds to adapt to college life and higher education.
John brings enormous enthusiasm and a wealth of experience to the role as an excellent researcher and an outstanding communicator of mathematics who regularly hosts outreach events designed to encourage young people and those across all walks of life to engage in mathematics and find the fun, magic, and enjoyment in it.
