Kastus scholarship awarded for women in maths @ TU Dublin

Published: 6 Nov, 2023

The School of Mathematics & Statistics is delighted to announce Megan Dooley as the inaugural winner of the Kastus Scholarship for Women in Mathematics & Statistics at TU Dublin.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics has partnered with Kastus to offer the Kastus Scholarship for Women in Mathematics & Statistics. The scholarship is designed to support young women studying mathematics and statistics at TU Dublin and underlines the School’s commitment to championing equality, diversity and inclusion in mathematics and statistics.  The School aims to highlight the wealth opportunities for women in these disciplines and in subsequent careers and ensure that, within STEM, mathematics is for everyone.

Megan Dooley is a second-year student of our BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences programme and the recipient of the 2023 Kastus Scholarship for Women in Mathematics & Statistics, the first to be offered in TU Dublin. The selection panel was overwhelmed by the personal stories and reflections of the applicants which provided insight into their personal journeys, the challenges faced by women in pursuing STEM subjects in education and their strength and motivation in pursuing their ambitions and love of mathematics and statistics. Mathematics and statistics are for everyone and it is hoped that the Kastus scholarship will not only support Megan in her studies but also champion this important message.

Megan wishes to see education, and in particular STEM, become more accessible, not just to young girls, but to all those who feel “out-of-place” in mainstream settings. Learning of the award of the scholarship, Megan said

I would like to acknowledge and thank the people who work to make education accessible and suited to people of all backgrounds and abilities, specifically those working in Youthreach programmes like the one that got me where I am today.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics has been recognised for its commitment to gender equality through the award of a Athena Swan Bronze Award in 2022 and is delighted to have the support of Kastus in its work.
