Mathematics students @ Irish Blood Transfusion Service
Congratulations to TU874/3 (BSc Mathematics & Statistics) student, Ciaran McLaughlin, for completing his work placement at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. Ciaran was analysing data to help improve the processing of blood, from the time it arrives at the centre to the time it gets transported to hospital. This is a highly time-sensitive process, so finding ways of making it more efficient is critical. The project demonstrates one of the many practical applications of mathematics and statistics that impact real lives and help make a better society!
A big thank you to Chief Medical Scientist, Aileen Farrelly, and Operational Excellence Manager, William Terzoni, for guiding Ciaran and giving him this valuable experience. They do incredible work that ultimately saves lives every day. A reminder that the Irish Blood Transfusion Service regularly experiences critically low stocks, and they are always looking for new donors!
