Student of TU873 Industrial Mathematics receives Hamilton Award from the Royal Irish Academy

Published: 15 Oct, 2021

Isabel Cooke, a final-year student studying Industrial Mathematics in the School of Mathematical Sciences, received the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics for TU Dublin on Friday 15 October. The School is very proud of Isabel and this recognition of her talent and achievements is richly deserved.

The Hamilton Prize is a prestigious prize awarded by the Royal Irish Academy to the top mathematical students in the penultimate year of undergraduate study.  The School of Mathematical Sciences nominated Isabel Cooke, a very talented mathematician who is now in the final year of her programme TU873 Industrial Mathematics (a strand of our main CAO-entry, full-time undergraduate programme, TU874 Mathematical Sciences) and who was top of her class in the penultimate year of her degree.  Isabel is a role model for future students and women thinking of pursuing mathematics.

The ceremony and associated activities are held annually to mark Hamilton Day, the anniversary of the famous Irish scientist, William Rowan Hamilton’s discovery of quaternion algebra on 16 October 1843.  Ibec sponsors the RIA prize and Hamilton Day activities as part of their support for STEM, a key to Ireland’s economic future.

In addition to receiving a prize and a certificate of achievement, prizewinners were invited to attend an exclusive masterclass with the 2021 Hamilton Lecture speaker, Professor Caroline Series, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick. Following the ceremony, they also enjoyed a private audience with Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin in conversation with Professor Caroline Series.

The participation of the most talented young mathematician in these inspiring and insightful events is very appropriate.  They have a bright future, full of opportunities and possibilities.

The School congratulates Isabel but also congratulates her family and all her friends and classmates who have supported and helped her and who share in her success.  Well done, Isabel!

The Hamilton Prize recognises these outstanding young mathematicians as they enter their final year of studies in universities all around the island of Ireland.  We celebrate Hamilton Day because Ireland has a rich history of scientific excellence, but through this prize we also look to the future. In honouring their academic excellence and we hope to support and encourage the next generation of great Irish scientists.” Dr Mary Canning, President of the Royal Irish Academy
