Vladimir Filatov was one of the recipients of the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics 2026 awarded by Fields medallist, Prof Maynard, on behalf of the RIA.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics is delighted to celebrate the award of one of its final year students of the programme TU874 BSc (Hons) Mathematical & Statistics with the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics for TU Dublin.

Each year, the Royal Irish Academy awards the prestigious undergraduate Hamilton Prize in Mathematics to the best undergraduate studying mathematics in each of the Universities. Vladimir is a deserved winner on behalf of TU Dublin. He is an immensely talented mathematician who has excelled not only academically but also, during the third year of his programme, completed a seven-month work placement with the Risk Advisory Group at Grant Thornton

At a very enjoyable ceremony in Academy House on Friday, 16 October, Fields Medallist, Professor James Maynard, presented Vladimir with his award as part of RIA's annual Hamilton Day celebration. The celebrations also featured a masterclass with Professor Maynard for the prize winners earlier in the day and culminated in the sold-out 2026 Hamilton Lecture. The public lecture focused on the importance of prime numbers and their enduring fascination to mathematicians in understanding and solving not only theoretical problems but also very modern challenges and included a fascinating discussion of the influence of AI, offering new opportunities in the field of mathematics and for mathematicians.

Dr Chris Hills, Head of School of Mathematics & Statistics, attended the prize giving on behalf of TU Dublin and subsequently observed,

Mathematics and Statistics are at the forefront of tackling current challenges. We are very proud of Vladimir who epitomises this practical approach to mathematics and is part of the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
