World Autism Awareness Day meets mathematics

Wednesday 2 April 2025 was World Autism Awareness Day. Dr John Butler is a lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. His research interests encompass mathematical neuroscience and models of sensory awareness with applications to autism.
Dr John Butler's research in mathematical neuroscience and, in particular, his mathematical models to explore multisensory integration (the processes whereby the brain interprets information from different senses such as sight, sound, and touch) was recently highlighted in the research and innovation news for the University.
Dr Butler's research, and that of his doctoral student Rebecca Brady, is genuinely innovative and provides new insights into behavioural neuroscience. It explores sensory processing in autism, uncovering delays in multisensory integration that affect learning and daily interactions. His findings were spotlighted on World Autism Awareness Day to emphasise the importance of inclusive policies in education, healthcare, and workplaces.
