TU Dublin celebrates World Town Planning Week 2023

The TU Dublin School of Architecture, Building and Environment (SABE) will celebrate World Town Planning Week from 6th November to 10th November 2023 with postgraduate and undergraduate seminar events focused on applied research and new policy developments in planning, regeneration and sustainable mobility.

Monday 6th November 2023 - Undergraduate Seminar in Strategic Planning

On Monday 6th November there will be an undergraduate seminar on current policy and sectoral developments in spatial planning.

This will take place in TU Dublin, Bolton Street – Rooms 417 and 421 from 13:00-16:00pm.

Speakers and talks will include: - 

1pm - 2pm: Future Careers in Planning, a talk by the RTPI Young Planners Network - ROOM 420

Members of the RTPI Young Planners Network will discuss their current careers and future career options in planning with current undergraduate students.  Speakers will include: Dean Brickland, Town Planner at MacCabe Durney Barnes and RTPI Young Planners Chairperson; Laura Hederman, Graduate Planner - Infrastructure Delivery at Uisce Éireann; Robert Molloy, Project Planner with Virtus Project Management and Convenor of the Young Planners RTPI Ireland; and, Sophie Smyth, Graduate Planner at Uisce Éireann.

2pm - 3pm: “How Spatial is Marine Spatial Planning?” a talk by Eugene Nixon, Marine Biologist, Spatial Planner and part-time Lecturer at TU Dublin - ROOM 417

Eugene Nixon is a former Member of an Bord Pleanála.  Eugene was also ACOM Vice-Chair of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.  Eugene lectures part-time in Marine Spatial Planning at TU Dublin on the MSc in Spatial Planning.  Eugene is a qualified marine biologist and spatial planner.  He is a consultant and expert in Marine Spatial Planning.

Eugene will provide a visual and interactive talk focusing on Spatial Information Sources for Marine Planning and the need for a scientific approach to planning of the marine environment.

3pm - 4pm: “Green Urban Logistics – implications for economic and spatial planning”, a talk by Nikolaos Valantasis Kanellos - ROOM 417

Nikolaos is Lecturer in Logistics at Technological University Dublin.  Nikolaos is Programme Chairperson for the MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (part-time and full-time). He is a member of the National Institute for Transport and Logistics. Nikolaos previously worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Regional Development in Panteion University, Greece, and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Heriot-Watt University, UK. He obtained his PhD in Port-centric Logistics from Heriot-Watt University, UK. 

Nikolaos will talk about Green Urban Logistics and implications for economic and spatial planning. Nikolaos has a strong research focus on the decarbonisation of logistics and freight transport and uptake of cleaner energy vehicles by logistics operators, with particular focus on exploring attitudes and perceptions of Irish road freight operators toward alternative fuelled vehicles.

 

Thursday 9th November 4.30 – 7.30pm - Postgraduate Research Seminar in Innovation in Mobility & Regeneration

On Thursday 9th November, TU Dublin are pleased to present a Postgraduate Research Seminar, “Innovation in Mobility & Regeneration - Creating new thinking in policy & practice”.

This will take place in TU Dublin, Bolton Street - Room 281 from 16:30-19:30pm.

The evening will include a Keynote Address from Brian Leddin, TD for Limerick City.  Brian Leddin is Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment and Climate Action and Green Party Spokesperson for Transport, Climate Action and Environment.  There will also be presentations and a panel discussion from recent graduates, along with reflections on Innovation in Mobility & Regeneration from TU Dublin Postgraduate Programme Chairpersons.  The evening will conclude with a reception and chance to network.

This event will be of interest to current and past students, as well as to those thinking of embarking on postgraduate studies, or to anyone with an interest in sustainable mobility and the regeneration of our towns and cities.

Topics of discussion will include: The relationship between Built Heritage & Well-Being in Ireland; Challenging Existing Mobility Patterns at a Suburban Sports Club; Considering Children’s Travel Needs; Turning Research into Development; Town Centre First – a policy for quality design outcomes for Irish towns?; and, Reflections on Innovation in Mobility & Regeneration.

The seminar will take place in TU Dublin Bolton Street, Room 281* on Thursday 9th November 2023, 16:30-19:30pm.
