Background
Dr Swarna Jaiswal is a Lecturer in Applied Microbiology and Food Packaging Technology at Technological University Dublin, City Campus, Ireland, and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Packaging & Bioproducts (CSPB). She holds a PhD from TU Dublin and an Executive MBA, combining scientific expertise with strategic and industry-focused research leadership. Before joining TU Dublin as an academic, she worked as a Research Scientist at CREST, TU Dublin, and as a Plant Microbiologist at Abbott Nutrition, Ireland. Her research focuses on sustainable and biodegradable packaging, active and intelligent packaging systems, antimicrobial films and coatings, bio-based nanocomposite materials, bioplastics, bioadhesives, and functional membranes for water filtration. She also works on the valorisation of agri-food and biomass by-products for packaging and bioproduct applications. Her work is strongly industry-facing, with involvement in more than 20 commercial and academic projects and collaborations with SMEs and multinational companies across Ireland and the UK. Through these partnerships, she provides research consultancy and develops practical, scalable solutions that improve food safety, extend shelf life, enhance material performance and support the transition to environmentally responsible materials. Dr Jaiswal contributes to teaching in microbiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, environmental microbiology, nutraceutical microbiology and packaging technology, and supervises postgraduate research in sustainable packaging, antimicrobial systems and bio-based materials. Through her research, teaching and industry engagement, she is advancing impactful innovations at the interface of applied microbiology, packaging technology, bioproducts and sustainability.
