Sick Leave Guidance Documents
Overview of Sick Leave Policy & Key Processes
Medical Certificates
- A medical certificate is required if your sick leave extends beyond 2 consecutive days.
- Please email the certificate to your Line Manager and copy the Leave & Benefits team (leaveandbenefits@tudublin.ie ) or ask your Line Manager to forward it.
Sick Leave Entitlements
Under the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme, the ordinary illness provisions are:
- Up to 3 months (92 days) on full pay
- Followed by up to 3 months (91 days) on half pay
- Maximum entitlement: 6 months (183 days) paid sick leave in a rolling four-year rolling period
Additional support such as Critical Illness Provisions (CIP) and Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR) may apply for longer absences. Please refer to Appendix II of the Sick Leave Policy for more information, or contact the Leave & Benefits team for guidance.
Illness Benefit – Absences Over 5 Days
- If your first absence in a calendar year exceeds 5 days, or if you are absent for 3 consecutive days thereafter, you must apply for Illness Benefit. This can be done online via MyWelfare.ie. See more information here
- Submit your application as soon as possible and no later than 6 weeks from the start of your illness.
- Select the option to have Illness Benefit paid directly into your bank account.
- Any Illness Benefit payable to you during paid sick leave, will be deducted from your next payslip at the standard rate. For more information see section 7 of the Sick Leave Policy.
Occupational Health
- Staff who are absent for 4 weeks or more must attend Occupational Health Physician before returning to work.
- A fit for work certificate should be provided to your Line Manager and the Leave & Benefits team at least one week before your intended return date, so that an appointment can be arranged.
- Please Note: TU Dublin recently changed to a different Occupational Health Provider (OHP). The new provider is called Corporate Health Ireland (CHI). While existing cases will remain with the old provider Medmark, new referrals will be made to CHI going forward.
Recording Sick Leave
PMSS Staff:
- Submit both uncertified and certified sick leave via the Core Portal. Once approved by your Line Manager, it will automatically update CoreTime.
Academic Staff:
- Sick leave cannot be submitted through the Portal.
