FAQs - Using the Library

The quickest way to find a library book or resource is to search the Library Catalogue at https://library.tudublin.ie/. You can search by title, keyword, subject, author, ISBN, and numerous other publication identifiers.

All registered TU Dublin students and staff automatically have library membership and can access and borrow from all five libraries. Your TU Dublin Student or Staff ID card is also your library card — no separate registration is required.

You will need your TU Dublin ID card to:

  • Access the library's physical space (required at Grangegorman)
  • Use the self-service machines to borrow books
  • Use the self-service laptop lockers
  • Borrow items at the library desks

If you have difficulty accessing any library space, contact library staff in person at the library desks, or by phone, email, or LibChat. If you do not yet have your Student ID card, let library staff know and they can assist with access.

Full information on joining and accessing the library: https://www.tudublin.ie/library/using-the-library/joining-accessing-the-library/

Your MyLibrary account allows you to manage your library loans, renew items, place holds, and view your borrowing history. Information about your MyLibrary account can be found on the Joining and Accessing the Library page: https://www.tudublin.ie/library/using-the-library/joining-accessing-the-library/

TU Dublin students and staff have full access to all five libraries. Members of the TU Dublin Alumni Network have guest access.

External visitors and students who are not affiliated with TU Dublin can visit the Joining and Accessing the Library page to find out what access options are available to them.

TU Dublin students and staff may borrow from any of the five TU Dublin libraries. You must have a current TU Dublin student or staff card to borrow from the library.

There are two ways to borrow:

  • At the self-service check machines in the library.
  • At the main library circulation desk, where a staff member can issue loans for you.

To return books you can use the Book Returns Box in the lobby of each library, the self-service machines, or hand items to staff at the library desk. Books should be returned to the library they were borrowed from.

Full step-by-step borrowing and returning instructions are on the Borrowing and Returning Books page.

 Loan entitlements are as follows:

  • Undergraduates: 10 items, 28-day loan period, 1 renewal of 28 days.
  • Postgraduates: 15 items, 28-day loan period, 1 renewal of 28 days.
  • Staff and Researchers: 20 items, 90-day loan period, 1 renewal of 90 days.

TU Dublin Library operates a fine-free service — there are no daily fines for overdue items.

However, if you have overdue items on your account you will not be able to borrow any new items until the overdue items are returned or renewed. If an item becomes lost or is not returned, a replacement cost will be charged.

Library books are organised using the Dewey Decimal System. Each item has a call number that you can use to locate it on the shelves. You can find the call number by searching for the item in the Library Catalogue.

If you cannot find the book or item on the shelves, go to the library circulation desk and ask a staff member for help. You can also contact a member of staff by phone, email, or LibChat through the Library website.

If the item is not held in any TU Dublin library, you may be able to request it through the Inter-Library Loan service — see the Inter-Library Loans question below.

If you lose an item you have borrowed from the library, contact your home library immediately. A default replacement cost will be added to your account. You can resolve this by paying the replacement cost (by debit or credit card at the library desk or over the phone) or by sourcing a replacement copy in good condition. Library staff will be happy to help you find the most cost-effective replacement available.

You can place a hold on a book that is currently out on loan by searching for it in the Library Catalogue and selecting the 'Place a Hold' button. When the item becomes available, you will receive a notification to your TU Dublin email address. Bring your TU Dublin ID card when collecting the item.

Yes. Books can be renewed once, provided they are not overdue and have not been reserved by another user. You can renew your loans in three ways:

  • Online via your MyLibrary account.
  • Using the self-service machines in the library.
  • By asking a member of staff at the library desk.

If a book is overdue, it can only be renewed by staff at the library desk. A book cannot be renewed if it has already been renewed once, or if another user has placed a hold on it.

You may be unable to renew a book if: it has already been renewed once; another user has placed a hold on it; or the item is overdue. Overdue items can only be renewed by staff at the library desk.

Only TU Dublin staff and postgraduate research students can request books to be transferred between libraries. Please contact your home library directly to make this request.

The Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service allows TU Dublin students and staff to request books, journal articles, theses, and conference papers from other academic libraries in Ireland, the UK, and abroad — when the item is not available in any TU Dublin library. Items may be supplied in print or electronic format.

Important: This service is only for items not currently held in TU Dublin libraries. If we hold the item in one of our libraries you should borrow it from there instead. Please search the Library Catalogue before submitting an ILL request.

The Library Link: CONUL Access Scheme is a cooperative access scheme for academic staff, academic-related staff, and students registered for a Masters or PhD degree at Irish universities. It is not open to students undertaking a Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Apprenticeship, or CPD module.

If you qualify, you can apply via the Joining and Accessing the Library page — scroll down to the 'Using Other Libraries' section and then to the 'Library Link: CONUL Access Scheme' section to find the application form.

If you qualify, you will normally be issued a card within a day or so of applying, and a library staff member will contact you to collect it from your home library.

You must have your TU Dublin ID card to borrow anything from the library. If you have lost your card, you will need to get a replacement before you can borrow items. See the Library Regulations for more information.
