English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 5.5 in each component.

Course Description

Event managers are needed to generate event ideas and facilitate them professionally. From a global event like the St Patrick’s Festival to regional food and sports weekends, corporate events, conferences, public celebrations and festivals, event management has evolved into big business. This growth nationally and internationally has been fuelled by the increase in the number, size and sophistication of events. Ireland has a thriving events sector which hosts exciting and varied events and festivals throughout the year.

In this four-year course, you’ll acquire practical and theoretical skills in all aspects of event management. You’ll become knowledgeable in areas such as event planning and design, marketing, sponsorship, staging and health and safety. You’ll be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and professional management skills you need. As well as event-specific subjects such as Event Industry Studies and Event Planning and Production, you’ll also follow a broad business course with subjects such as Management, Marketing, Finance and Law. European languages are increasingly important in the world of work.

Languages

You can choose to study one European language:

• French, German, Irish (post-Leaving Cert level)
• Italian, Spanish (beginner level)

Note: Each language option is dependent on a minimum number of students.

Work Placement

In Year 1, students are required to complete 150 hours work experience for the module Event Operations. There’s a six-month work placement in Year 3.

You’ll graduate with the knowledge and confidence to work in the events sector. Many graduates have established their own event management companies. To qualify for Advanced Entry applicants must be currently studying, completing, or have successfully completed, studies at Level 6, 7 or 8 in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) or an equivalent, in a related area. You must demonstrate by providing transcripts of results that you have achieved the learning outcomes for each stage you wish to advance past, for example:

• To enter Year 2 via Advanced Entry, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Year 1.
• For entry to Year 3, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1 and 2.
• For entry to Year 4, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1, 2, and 3.

The Event Management degree provided me with the experience, tools and knowledge to further my career in Event Management. The work placement opportunities incorporated throughout the 4 years were invaluable and allowed me to gain a great sense of the different aspects of the event industry. After leaving TU Dublin I know I am ready for whatever the industry throws at me and am excited for my future!

There are so many great things about this course.  The variation of modules would be a big one. There are so many directions to take in the events industry and the course covers all areas throughout the years to guide students in their career path so when you come to the final year you have an indication of what you like and where you want to go.

The work placement was a critical part of my experience. The fact I had the opportunity to experience what it would be like to work in the events industry was crucial to my learning and to have the support from the university in doing so, gave me great confidence and ease.  Lastly, I have to say the atmosphere in the lectures has to be the best thing. Every individual in the room, including the lecturer, brought passion and added value to the modules. There was a great sense of teamwork, everybody cheering for each other, which was encouraged by the lecturers. From discussing this with Event Management students from other years, I know this is something which is repeatedly reflected and it is very encouraging to know these are the people who will be working alongside me in the industry.

The best part of my four years in the Event Management course was my professional work placement. I was given the opportunity to work as an Event Operations Intern in Croke Park, one of the best experiences of my life. I worked on some of the biggest events delivered in Ireland in 2019, including the Spice Girls and Westlife concerts, the All-Ireland Hurling Final and two All-Ireland Football Finals due to the replay. The fact that the course gave you the opportunity to complete such placements should definitely be something to look out for when applying for a college course, as there are a number of courses that do not facilitate such experiences.
